Booking your first wax is a lovely step towards smoother skin for longer. It also helps to know what to expect. Here is exactly what our therapists explain to every new client, so you understand why the first visit feels different, and why the second and third feel so much easier.
Shaving and waxing are not the same thing
A razor cuts the hair at the surface of the skin. The root stays exactly where it is, so the hair is back within a day or two, with a blunt tip that feels stubbly as it grows.

Wax lifts the whole hair out, from the root. The follicle then needs time to grow a brand new hair, which is why smooth skin lasts for weeks rather than days. Many clients also find the regrowth feels softer over time.

Why the first wax is different
Your hairs do not all grow at the same time. Each one follows its own cycle: a growing phase, a resting phase and a shedding phase. At any moment, some hairs are fully grown, some are just starting, and some are still hidden under the skin.
That means three things on your first visit:
- Some hairs are too short to catch this time. They surface a few days later, so you may notice a little regrowth sooner than you expected. This is normal, not a missed patch.
- Hair that has only ever been shaved is often stronger at the root, so it can feel a little more intense the first time.
- After two or three visits, spaced about four to six weeks apart, the hairs start to fall into the same rhythm. That is when results last longest and the treatment feels quickest and most comfortable.
The golden rule between visits: please don't shave. Every shave resets the cycle and takes you back to the start. If you need a tidy-up, book a wax a little earlier instead.
How long should the hair be?
For the wax to grip well, hair should be around 5mm long, roughly the length of a grain of rice. That is usually two to three weeks of growth after shaving. Too short and it won't lift; very long hair is fine, as we trim it first.
Preparing for your first wax
- Stop shavingGive the hair two to three weeks to grow to the right length.
- Exfoliate gentlyA light exfoliation a day or two before helps lift the hairs. Skip it on the day itself.
- Skin clean and bareCome without body lotion, oil or fake tan on the area.
- Time it kindlySkin can be more sensitive just before and during your period. If you can, book for the week after.
- Tell us about your skinRetinol, strong acids, some medications and recent sun can all affect how the skin responds. Your therapist will ask, so we can choose the right wax for you.
What happens in the room
Your therapist will explain each step before it happens. Everything that touches your skin is single-use: fresh spatulas every time, so there is no double dipping, and sterilised tools opened from their pouch in front of you. For sensitive and intimate areas we use a gentle hard wax that grips the hair rather than the skin. A slow breath out as each strip comes away makes a real difference.
Aftercare for the next 24 to 48 hours
- Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms and intense exercise.
- Skip the sun and sunbeds, and wait 24 hours before applying fake tan.
- Wear loose, soft clothing over the area.
- Keep the skin clean and avoid heavily perfumed products.
- From day three, exfoliate gently once or twice a week and moisturise daily. This is the best way to prevent ingrown hairs.
Three myths, answered
"Waxing makes hair grow back thicker."
It doesn't. That idea comes from shaving, where the blunt cut tip feels coarser. Waxed hair regrows with its natural fine tip.
"The first wax is the worst, so it's always like that."
The first visit is the most intense. With regular appointments the hair weakens and falls into rhythm, and most clients find it much quicker and easier.
"A few little red dots mean something went wrong."
Small red dots or a pink glow are simply the follicles saying hello after the hair came out from the root. They usually settle within a few hours.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a wax last?
Usually three to five weeks. Results last longer once your hair growth is in rhythm, after two or three regular visits.
Why do I see hair a few days after my first wax?
Those hairs were still under the skin, in an earlier stage of growth. They will be caught on your next visit, and regular appointments bring them into the same cycle.
How long should my hair be before waxing?
Around 5mm, about the length of a grain of rice, which is usually two to three weeks after shaving.
Can I shave between waxing appointments?
Please don't. Shaving resets the growth cycle. If you need smooth skin sooner, book your wax a little earlier.
